ADHD and Substance Abuse

ADHD and addiction or Substance Use Disorders (SUD): is there a relationship between these two? And if so, how are they related?

What do we know about ADHD and SUD? 

• There is evidence to suggest that ADHD increases the risk of developing an addiction.
• Treating ADHD in childhood might prevent development of SUD (Substance Use Disorder).
• ADHD is increasingly recognised as an invalidating and highly prevalent disorder in children and in adults.
• ADHD is a common diagnosis among SUD patients (prevalence15-30 % in American studies).
• Treating ADHD may have a positive influence on the severity and course of SUD.
• There is strong evidence of a genetic contribution to the predisposition to develop addiction after repeated drug exposure.
