What do we know about ADHD and SUD?
- There is evidence to suggest that ADHD increases the risk of developing an addiction.
- Treating ADHD in childhood might prevent development of SUD (Substance Use Disorder).
- ADHD is increasingly recognised as an invalidating and highly prevalent disorder in children and in adults.
- ADHD is a common diagnosis among SUD patients (prevalence15-30 % in American studies).
- Treating ADHD may have a positive influence on the severity and course of SUD.
- There is strong evidence of a genetic contribution to the predisposition to develop addiction after repeated drug exposure.
